Do you REALLY know your healthy foods?

We’ve already heard about the basic healthy foods, such as veggies, fruits and grains, but there are some foods you may be eating on a daily basis that aren’t all that great. You may also be surprised at some of the other facts about some foods you may have previously thought weren’t the best. According to CBS news, the following two lists outlay the bad and good foods that have had misconceptions about their true value.

First, let’s start with the BAD:

Blueberry Muffins

Blueberry muffins – we’ve all probably known in the back of our minds that these delicious morning snacks were too good to be true. Yes, they have blueberries, which doesn’t really count as a fruit with the mixture of sugar – plus each carries about 400 calories.

Diet Soda – Does “let me get a big mac, large fry and diet coke” sound familiar?

Vitamin Water – Believe it or not, has 200 cal and if drunk on a daily basis could equal 20 lbs gained annually.

Pretzels – 15 oz bag = 24 slices of white bread.

Now, for the GOOD:

Baby Bananas

Bananas – lots of potassium, regulates blood pressure and flushes out excess sodium; get baby bananas for fewer calories – 50 calories each.

White potatoes – previous thought as a no-no; has more potassium than bananas. The skin has fiber and the veggie has resistant starch that helps to control blood sugar. It also helps to increase calorie burning (no, potato chips or other fired potatoes don’t count).

Frozen veggies – Many used to think that frozen veggies diminished many of their vitamins, but they actually retain more of the vitamin C (as long as there are no other added ingredients).

Watermelon with a twist

watermelon

After all that barbeque this 4th of July, possibly the best thing you can grab for dessert is a healthy slice of watermelon. It’s low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium and also a very good source of Vitamin A and Vitamin C. If you want to try something new and absolutely delightful with this 4th of July tradition, squeeze some fresh lime juice on it. It takes the flavor to a gourmet level and increases your vitamin C count for added health benefits. If you’ve been asked to bring a dessert to this year’s All-American shindig, this might be the easiest, healthiest and most appealing dish of them all. It will certainly be the most refreshing!
